ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — A new report by the American Cancer Society shows cancer death rates have been falling for at least 25 years.

SLU Care's Dr. Theresa Schwartz, a breast cancer surgeon at SSM Health SLU Hospital, says one reason why is because of better education about preventing cancer.

"Such as having colonoscopies, such as Well-Woman exams for cervical cancer, making sure you're monitoring obesity and dropping our tobacco rates. But also screening mammograms and making sure people are catching diseases as soon as they pop up as being abnormal. Any cancer that is caught at an early stage has a higher chance of survival."

The latest numbers show the cancer death rate has dropped 27 percent since 1991 -- with the lung cancer death rate down nearly 50 percent among men over that time.
