ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Before Sunday's win against the San Diego Padres, the St. Louis Cardinals made some roster moves, including sending pitcher Alex Reyes down to Triple-A Memphis. The 24-year-old has allowed five runs in three innings pitched out of the bullpen to start the season.

Cards president of baseball operations John Mozeliak talked about the "goal" of sending the team's long-time top prospect back to the minors.

"Getting him consistent touches makes the most sense and so ultimately that's our goal. Is to get him in a routine down in Memphis where he can pitch an inning or two at a time and then off a couple days, then repeat and hopefully get himself back to what we believe he can be – a very, very good reliever in our bullpen – and we're just not there yet."

Mozeliak and the Cardinals also sent infielder Yairo Munoz to Memphis, to call up pitchers Giovanny Gallegos (RHP) and Tyler Webb (LHP). Webb was the last player cut from Opening Day roster to start the season and Mozeliak says he wanted to add an extra pitcher to the roster in preparation for this weekend's two-game series in Monterrey, Mexico. But we'll likely see Munoz back in the majors for those games in Mexico, as MLB is allowing both the Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds to add an extra bat to their rosters for the weekend.

Reyes took the loss in Friday's home opener for Cards against San Diego, allowing three runs on three hits in his inning of work.

Also on Sunday, manager Mike Shildt described the conversation he had with Reyes as a shared focus on what's best for both the young pitcher and the Cardinals.

"Candidly, they both synced up," Shildt says. "We love Alex and we love his stuff. I love everything about the kid."

Mozeliak also talked about bringing up Gallegos from Memphis and says he "has the ability to get left and right handers out."
