ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Public School has announced it is canceling all classes on Wednesday due to the extreme cold that's expected.
Health officials warn it would only take 10-to-15 minutes of exposure for frostbite to occur, which has schools worried about students waiting at bus stops.
A message on the St. Louis Public Schools website says: "All Saint Louis Public Schools will be closed Wednesday, January 30th, due to wind chill warnings and advisories. All afterschool activities and sports are also canceled Wednesday. All district offices and facilities, however, will remain open. Tuesday evening activities and games will be held as scheduled."
Temperatures in St. Louis Tuesday night through Thursday morning are going to be "brutally cold" says KMOX's AccuWeather meteorologist Dean DeVore. He says Artic air will drop temperatures to a low of six-below overnight tonight, with a high of eight-degrees on Wednesday.
The real-feel temperatures are expected to stay below zero all day, Wednesday.
In Illinois, a disaster proclaimation has been made by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
It will feel anywhere from 25-below-zero in southern Illinois to as much as 55-below-zero in northern parts of the state between Tuesday night and Thursday morning.
