Coronavirus complicates plans for surrogate moms, parents

Wood River, IL (KMOX) - Since last year KMOX has been keeping you updated on a special pregnancy – a Metro East mom who's carrying a child for a couple who can't have their own.  Erica Chalcraft is almost due, but the coronavirus may complicate things.

"That could very well pose a very big threat for them being able to come to the hospital for the delivery," says Chalcraft.  The due date is roughly two months away.  The couple she's carrying a child for lives on the West Coast and planned to be in the birthing suite to welcome their baby boy.

"We haven't really heard a lot about what the next steps would be. I think everybody is learning this process day by day.  Everything's kind of up in the air right now as far as what's going to happen."

Chalcraft says they're considering ways to bring the couple to the birth virtually if COVID-19 restrictions prevent them from there in person.

She says she is strictly following the stay at home order to try an ensure she stays healthy these last weeks.
