ST. LOUIS, MO (KMOX) -  Add one more concern to the list of worries about remote learning.  Experts warn that virtual classwork could add to eye strain.

"If they're squinting, if they're rubbing their eyes a lot, if their attention on the near work is reduced," then Dr. Tarek Nabhan says your children could be experiencing eye strain.  Nabhan is an Optometrist and Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Missouri St. Louis.  He says eye strain is really a collection of symptoms that include "text neck" and "dry eye".  "These have academic and work related implications with reduced productivity and learning."  He points to studies that show words per minute someone is able to read and focus on can be diminished.

He encouraged families to follow the 20-20-20 rule - for every 20 minutes at a screen, take a 20 second break, to focus on something 20 feet away.
