DeWitt on KMOX: April 9 return date for MLB is 'not viable', camp workouts remain voluntary

JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) - Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr. is a baseball fan, like you.

And like you, during this unprecedented time in our history, he's going to have to wait a while for his beloved game to return.

"The latest is that the April 9 date is not viable at this point," DeWitt told KMOX outside the Cardinals spring training facility.

Major League Baseball, in fact, will not start for at least two months, based on recommendations from the CDC to restrict events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.

Following a conference call with owners, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred released a statement that baseball would push back Opening Day "in accordance with that guidance."

"It remains to be seen when the season would open," DeWitt said. "But we'll just see how it plays out. Hopefully sooner rather than later."

In the meantime, DeWitt said, players who live in Palm Beach County will still be able to use the Cardinals' facility for their own workouts.

"It's voluntary on their part," DeWitt told KMOX. "We don't have any organized workouts. MLB is encouraging players, particularly those who don't live in the area, to go home and not do organized workouts."

He said MLB is going to make a recommendation on how to pay gameday staff.

But what about minor leaguers, who were here and gone in a few days? How will they be compensated?

"The minor league player situation will be addressed once the MLBPA situation gets resolved," DeWitt said, "And hopefully that will happen relatively quickly."
