JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) - Mike Shildt, like millions of people, is dealing with something unprecendented - a coronavirus outbreak that has caused cancellations, postponements and suspensions of major events around the country, including the sport he manages.

"This is bigger than the game of baseball," Shildt said. "It's very much a part of our societal fabric right now. Our world is in unchartered territory."
At the same time, when it does restart, the Cardinals manager will be prepared. He's currently listening to direction from Major League Baseball and his club on how to properly set up a workout schedule for the players who remain in this area.
In the meantime, can baseball eventually play a role in helping people by providing some healing in these uncertain times?
"Baseball has played a vital role in American history," Shildt said. "When we've had crises in the past... baseball pulls to people. It allows people to get back to something they love. It gives them something to think about that brings them joy."

Yankees minor leaguer has virus, 1st MLB-affiliated player
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — A minor leaguer for the New York Yankees has tested positive for the coronavirus, becoming the first known player affiliated with Major League Baseball to contract COVID-19.
The team said Sunday the unidentified player had spent his entire time at the minor league complex and hadn't been over at the main stadium and facilities used by the major leaguers.
Yankees player representative Zack Britton recently said the team had voted to remain together in Tampa and continue voluntary workouts. In the wake of the virus outbreak, Major League Baseball and the union had given players the option to stay at the site of their spring camp, return to their offseason homes or go to the club's home city.
MLB is expected to update teams on its policy Monday.
