Mozeliak and Shildt: Contact tracing helping to understand COVID-19 positives

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Self-isolating in their hotel rooms in Milwaukee, Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak and manager Mike Shildt made their regular appearances on "Sports on a Sunday Morning," while waiting for more COVID-19 test results to come in.

And both made their feelings very clear that contact tracing has been very important in understanding both how the spread of the virus started in their 58-person traveling party... and how to contain it moving forward.

The Cardinals, as of Sunday morning, were planning to travel to Detroit for games on Tuesday, Wednesday (doubleheader) and Thursday. They have not played since last Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Here is a sample of some of the comments from Mozeliak and Shildt:

Mozeliak on @KMOXSports last hour from the @Cardinals hotel: "We're still awaiting word on some testing. Once we receive that, it will really help determine what our next steps are. There's a lot of questions that still need to be answered. We're just trying to remain patient."

Mozeliak on @KMOXSports: "I think we have a sense of how this may have begun. It's not something that I can discuss publicly... I don't want anybody to just get destroyed over 'you were the person.' But contact tracing is essential if you're trying to understand how to contain."

Shildt on @KMOXSports: "We've had a lot of hard conversations, a lot of contact tracing. I can speak with a high level of confidence that our individuals in our organization have been responsible and have gone above and beyond the protocols that are in place... 1/3

"The fact of the matter is, with this being an asymptomatic situation... there's measures that have been in place that have prevented everyone getting it. But there's nothing that's foolproof that says it won't or can't spread. And that's effectively what's taken place... 2/3

"Our players have been responsible. What I don't appreciate is for people to make some assumptions about what has or hasn't taken place. As of this moment, in research we've done and the conversations we've had, it's not true. I can easily defend the group's actions." #stlcards
