George Poage was the first African-American to compete in the Olympics.
At the 1904 games in St. Louis, Poage ran in the 60-meter dash. Poage also ran in the 400 meter hurdles race and came in third place.
Joseph Stadler of Cleveland, also African-American, won a silver in the standing high jump. Poage and Stadler--the first African-American athletes to medal at the Olympic Games--did so in St. Louis.
After the Olympics, George Poage taught at Sumner High School.
