J.D. Shelley bought a house at 4600 Labadie Avenue in 1939 for his family. But neighbors cited a covenant barring its sale to "persons not of Caucasian race." Shelley sued and the case made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which in 1948, ruled in favor of Shelley stating the enforcement of a racially-based restrictive covenant in a state court would violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
