Josephine Baker went from a one-room shack in St. Louis to a thirty-room mansion in Paris. Born in 1906, she begged for money on local streets. In 1919, at age 13, she left St. Louis and soon became the toast of Paris as an exotic dancer. Audiences loved her. By age 21, Baker received forty-thousand love letters and 2,000 proposals for marriage. Einstein, Hemingway and Picasso were her friends. And she participated in the French Resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II for which she was bestowed, the Legion of honor, France's highest award.
