Lloyd Gaines graduated first in St. Louis Vashon High School's Class of 1931 and got his bachelor's degree at Lincoln University where he was president of his senior class.

Gaines applied for admission to the all-white University of Missouri Law School, the first black man to do so.  His application was rejected.  Gaines sued and won 6-2 U.S. Supreme Court decision 1938.  It was the beginning of the end for school segregation in Missouri.

Gaines disappeared four months later, never to be seen again.
