Shildt says no special message needed: 'Go after number 12'

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Monday morning inside the St. Louis Cardinals spring training clubhouse, Mike Shildt addressed the 61 players, coaches and staff present for his first spring training as manager. He says it wasn't a "State of the Union Address," but instead more of a reminder of "this is what St. Louis Cardinals baseball is about." 

"Lets just introduce the mortar and then lets start to put the bricks on it as we go through spring training," Shildt says, describing the basics of his speech. "It's just, lets play the game right. It's attention to detail. It's to prepare well, execute and celebrate."

He did not say if there was a specific mention of expecting a World Series trophy in 2019, but that's because he didn't have to. 

"I think that's an understood that, that's an expectation of this organization to compete and go after number 12," Shildt says, talking about adding to the Cards' 11 championship trophies.

He says Cards chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. spoke, as did president of baseball operations John Mozeliak, general manager Mike Girsch and all of the coaching staff and guest instructors who will be at camp. Shildt says team alumni did not speak to the full squad, Monday, but expects that will happen throughout the week.
