KANSAS CITY (KMOX) — A challenge to Missouri's new eight-week abortion ban is being allowed to go forward.
The effort was stopped by Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, who rejected two petitions which would've put in the ban on the ballot.

"What he was trying to do was to prevent us from collecting signatures at all and completely thwarting the referendum process, so the Court of Appeals says he can't do that."
ACLU of Missouri executive director Tony Rothert says 100,000 signatures need to be turned in by August 28th, in order to keep the abortion ban from becoming law. Then, there'd likely be an election in 2020.

But Rothert says with the time lost, he's not sure they'll be able to collect those signatures by the deadline.
