ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A couple of weeks after visiting Major League Soccer headquarters, one of the key players in the effort to bring a team to St. Louis says the city is still in the top spot to win a franchise. "The feedback we're getting from (Commissioner) Don Garber, from his team and from the other league owners has been nothing but positive."

Jim Kavanaugh tells Sports on a Sunday Morning things are still going to plan. "We're focused on the things that we can control and we believe that we've removed a lot of the impediments."

There's also progress being made on two key issues brought up during the recent visit to New York, Kavanaugh says.

BREAKING NEWS! Team #MLS4THELOU met with MLS Commissioner Don Garber @thesoccerdon in NYC to discuss STL’s proposal for securing a team. Still much to do, but #MLS4THELOU has put together a plan that has the league’s attention! Keep showing your spirit STL, @MLS is watching! pic.twitter.com/3NqGmVYOSq

"MLS would like to see us almost get to a point where there's a letter of intent or some type of verbal arrangement in regards to some of the tier one sponsors- stadium sponsor, jersey sponsor- that is one thing we're moving aggressively forward with," Kavanaugh says.

He says even though there's been a lot of talk about Sacramento's bid, he still feels St. Louis is in the lead.

"Bottom line," he says, "I think they're very excited about our plan here in St. Louis."
