ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — The group trying to bring Major League Soccer to St. Louis is donating $100,000 to St. Louis Public Schools to help elementary school kids play. SLPS Athletic Director Teron Sharp says soccer can be expensive, the money from MLS4TheLou will go toward buying some basics.

"We've got bags for soccer balls, we've got cleats, uniforms, shin guards...everything that we could get!" Sharp told KMOX's Alex Degman. "We were able to get everyone started at every level of our district!"

Wow! Special thanks to @MLS4theLou for their donation of $100,000 to fund soccer programs in SLPS and @MathewsDickey! The funds came from community purchases of scarves and hats that promote @MLS4theLou with a donation match from @Enterprise. More info: https://t.co/QhoAC9Y5T6 pic.twitter.com/y3c2rrUzWB

Sharp says all the city's high schools now all have new goals and new coaching equipment -- the high school fields are used for all district soccer games.

She also says the district added an elementary soccer program within the last year and interest is already picking up.She realizes, like many, that soccer is very popular in St. Louis -- she's glad the donation will help public school students in St. Louis get the same opportunities as others in the region.

WHAT ABOUT ST. LOUIS' BID FOR AN MLS TEAM?

MLS4TheLou officials, like the rest of us, continue to wait for news on an MLS expansion franchise coming to the Gateway City.

"Mr. Soccer" Bill McDermott recently told KMOX's Total Information A.M. Weekend that he's expecting an announcement to be made during the All-Star Game on July 31st in Orlando, Fla.
