ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak says it was a combination of other teams asking for too much and/or pulling players off the trade market as mains reasons why no major deals were made at the deadline.
What St. Louis did do, was create some roster and cap space, and acquire pitching depth via the trade of Jedd Gyorko to LA and the acquisition of Zac Rosscup.
One Cardinals prospect Mozeliak mentioned in particular who was asked about by other clubs was Cards' No. 2 overall prospect, Dylan Carlson. He said the they weren't going to give him up "for 10 starts or 11 starts," meaning they weren't prepared to take on a starting pitcher for rental at that price.

July 30, 2019 While Moezliak says he can understand the frustration of fans, as St. Louis has missed the playoffs for the last three seasons, Shildt believes this team has plenty to get there this year.
"I think it's a little insulting to say this team, as hard as they prepare, as hard and they compete, that they need a jolt," Shildt says. "I don't think that's accurate."

July 31, 2019 This is the first year of the new trade deadline with the abolishment of waiver trades in August, which brought Larry Walker to St. Louis in August 2004. So the players on the Cardinals roster and in the system as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, that's the team that will have to get it done.
You can see some of what Mozeliak, general manager Mike Girsch and manager Mike Shildt had to say about the trade deadline in the video above.
Since a No. 2 or 3 starting pitcher wasn't acquired, the Cards say Michael Wacha will be thrown back into the rotation and Girsch says he will get a start on Monday night to open the Los Angeles Dodgers series.
At the start of play Wednesday, the Cardinals are in first place in the NL Central and they expect Marcell Ozuna to return by the end of this weekend.
