WATERLOO, IL (KMOX) - The Monroe County Health Department in Waterloo gave away over 1,000 bottles of hand sanitizer in just two-and-a-half hours on Wednesday. The 275 gallons of sanitizer was made and donated by Stumpy's Spirits, a distillery outside nearby Columbia.
David Stumpf is the owner.
"We decided to go ahead and donate that," Stumpf says. "Then the fine folks down at the county health department were able to secure some plastic bottles and bottle that stuff up late yesterday, which is no easy task."
He says the health department had planned to start giving it away to county residents at 11 a.m.
"But the line had already started to form quite a bit before then and the local police department was like, 'Hey guys, we should probably get this show on the road. We're starting to back up traffic on the highway,'" he says.
So, they started at about 10 a.m. and were finished by 12:30 p.m. Stumpf says he hopes to have enough sanitizer to do another county giveaway within a couple of days.
The free sanitizer is only for Monroe County residents. It's limited to one bottle per household every three weeks.
