ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Tuesday is the first time the St. Louis Cardinals will play a home game since the death of Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock. So a special tribute to him has been placed in the infield dirt, his No. 20.
The number he wore for all of his 16 seasons with St. Louis has been etched in the dirt just behind the second base bag. The Cards host the Minnesota Twins for a doubleheader on Tuesday that started at 2:15 p.m.
He retired as MLB's all-time leader in steals, passing Ty Cobb's record in 1977 that was once thought to be insurmountable. He finished his career with 938 stolen bases.
Brock recorded 3,023 hits in his 19-year career and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985.
Another shrine to Brock has continued to grow outside of Busch Stadium since his death. Letters, hats, flowers, balloons and more special messages have been placed on and around his statue just outside the stadium.
