(KMOX) - The two-minute Nike commercial featuring controversial former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick has won an Emmy at the 2019 Creative Arts Emmy Awards.
The spot released last September highlights superstar athletes LeBron James, Serena Williams and others, and touches on the controversy of NFL players protesting racial inequality, police brutality and other issues by demonstrating during the national anthem.
The commercial is nominated for "Outstanding Commercial" alongside entries from Netflix, Apple and Sandy Hook Promise, a gun violence prevention organization.
Kaepernick narrates the full spot but first physically appears midway through. As a camera pans to reveal Kaepernick's face, a reflection of a United States flag is visible on the facade of a building behind him.
This summer Kaepernick was back in the news after rumors that Nike stopped production of a 4th of July shoe which had the Betsy Ross American Flag. Kaepernick reportedly told Nike executives he believed the flag was too closely related to slavery.
