Cruising, drag racing, doughnuts problem in downtown St. Louis prompting changes

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Mayor Lyda Krewson calls the situation untenable and will not be tolerated.

Krewson says despite changes on the downtown riverfront and South Broadway, the situation is getting worse and in some cases the cruisers are moving to other areas.

Early Monday morning, there was a fatal accident on Washington Avenue by 10th Street. Krewson says the car was traveling at a high rate of speed. A female was killed in the accident. So far, police have not released any additional information on the incident.

Krewson says "Downtown has seen a lot of cruising, drag racing, cars on vacant surface parking lots, doing wheelies and doughnuts."

In many cases guns are being fired. Krewson adds, "we're considering closing some of the surface parking lots." Additionally, Krewson is also looking at making traffic flow changes. Right now, this is in the planning phase, no firm date, though an announcement could come later this week.
