Pro Football Hall of Famer Kevin Greene returned home to be honored in Granite City

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOX) - A Pro Football Hall of Famer who grew up in the Metro East returned this weekend to see his name in lights.

Kevin Greene was one of the toughest ever to play in the NFL, but he has a soft spot in his heart for Granite City, "The Hall of Fame thing three years ago and now having a field named after me, it's kind of surreal at this moment. It's just crazy. It's such an honor."

Two weeks from Monday @IHSA_IL football practice begin. If you're a linebacker, play like Granite City's Kevin Greene. Look him up. pic.twitter.com/jbwC0e7E5V

Greene played for Granite City South High School before walking-on at Auburn, then becoming one of the NFL's all-time best pass rushers.

Greene attended the dedication of Granite City High's football field in his name Saturday.

His former coach Jerry McKechan was one of the driving forces behind the naming effort, "Kevin always talks about Granite City. He comes back and speaks to our high school kids. He's donated shoulder pads and money to our community. When young kids see that name 'Kevin Greene Field' it'll be a great inspiration for them."

Unfortunately for Granite High football fans, the Warriors lost Saturday night to Jerseyville, 23-14.
