Helping widows during the pandemic

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - As we approach Mother's Day, one organization is helping women who recently lost their husbands work through their grief during the pandemic.

The stay-at-home orders mean many widows are dealing with their loss in isolation. CEO of The National Council of Jewish Women in St. Louis, Ellen Alper says some are alone for the first time in their lives and those without family in the area can't even get groceries or gifts dropped off.

She says it's causing significant emotional trauma, "Because not only have they lost s spouse, they've lost their support system. People can't come to their homes so many friends and family have had to resort to drivebys or zoom calls or other ways to communicate."

Alper adds if their adult children live in another city, it makes it even harder and makes them even more isolated.

The NCJW has a support group called, Wife Widow Woman which has also turned video conferencing and good old fashioned phone calls to stay in touch.

Alper says the services they offer are free and available to the public.
