KIMMSWICK, Mo (KMOX) - The mayor of a quaint tourist town in Missouri is sending an SOS to the federal government, saying the town is in need of federal funding because of the shutdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
For four weeks now the streets have been mostly empty in Kimmswick, Mo., the town about 30 miles south of downtown St. Louis that's locally famous for it's Apple Butter and Strawberry Festivals. Mayor Phil Stang says he agrees with the medical experts who say it's not time to reopen businesses, but at the moment they have "zero income" in the city and are in need of help.
He’s seeking a $250,000 federal grant to offset deep losses in sales tax revenue.
Some merchants in the city are hopeful to reopen around Mother's Day weekend, which is May 10.
