ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Mayor Lyda Krewson's Administration is looking for some way to bring back red light cameras, which were struck down by the Missouri Supreme Court as unconstitutional.
The mayor's office says the move is motivated by safety, not a search for more revenue.
In that last three years that red light cameras were operational in the city – 2012, 2013 and 2014 – there were 117 people killed in roadway accidents, the mayor's office says. In the three years after they were removed 171 people were killed in roadway accidents. An increase of 46%, the mayor's office says.
The first step is a request for proposals from companies, to see if they have the technology that will deal with speeders and red light runners in a method that would withstand a court challenge.
The mayor's office says any new system would have to identify the driver, not just the license plate, which was the deciding factor in the high court case that threw out red light cameras before.
Requests for proposals are due in the mayor's office Dec. 12.
