Missouri ranks almost dead last in study of 'most attractive' states

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Sorry Missouri residents, but this isn't going to help your self-esteem.

Zippia, a company that helps those looking to change or advance in their careers, studied all 50 states in the U.S. to find which states were the "most attractive."

Missouri ranked No. 49 and Illinois was No. 21. 

To create the full ranking they used "common traits people find appealing in a mate." 

• Interest in hair, clothes, and other grooming
• Obesity rates
• Percent of residents who are physically active
• Average Income
• STD rates

The St. Louis area has some of the worst STD rates in the country and the city was No. 1 for gonorrhea and chlamydia cases last year.

"Attraction isn't just surface level," the study stated. "People are attracted to partners who are successful and well-educated. After all, what's more beautiful than a nice mind? To measure these, we looked at income levels from the Census' ACS. Income is correlated with education and while money isn't the only measure of success, it's not a bad place to start."

Here were the top-10 states: 

1. New Jersey
2. Hawaii
3. California
4. Massachusetts
5. New York
6. Colorado
7. Connecticut
8. Rhode Island
9. Alaska
10. Arizona
