SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KMOX) - Several new traffic laws are taking effect in Illinois January 1. Among them: no more video streaming while driving.
YouTube and other services have become popular over the years for some drivers to stream music videos as their playlist instead of other services like the radio, Spotify or Pandora. But State Sen. Steve Stadleman (D-Rockford) says actually watching the videos happens too."Unfortunately, there have been incidents across the country where drivers, operators of motor vehicles, watch videos on their personal cell phone or electronic device while driving," Stadelman said during floor debate during the 2019 spring legislative session."There's some concern the current state law is somewhat unclear and it could use further clarification to ensure that's prohibited," Stadelman says. "This legislation specifically states watching video on a personal electronic device will not be allowed."Some other new traffic laws coming to Illinois in 2020:
- Smoked or tinted lights won't be allowed. - Fines are going up for reckless driving, passing a stopped school bus and speeding in a construction zone.- If you hit a construction worker in a work zone, the fine goes from $10,000 to $25,000.
