Police: 7-year-old shot after trying to break into St. Louis home

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — A 7-year-old was shot and 12-year-old was hurt after the boys tried to break into a St. Louis home on Tuesday.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says the incident happened in the 1800 block of N. 20th Street in north St. Louis just after 6 p.m. 

A 23-year-old man who was remodeling the home shot at the boys when he saw them climbing through a broken window, police say.  The man told police he was fearing for his life after hearing glass shatter and banging sounds coming from the back of the house. 

The boys ran and the 7-year-old boy was shot in the leg and the 12-year-old was hit in the wrist by debris, according to police.

The incident happened just after 6 p.m. in the 1800 block of N. 20th Street, which is in the St. Louis Place neighborhood.

Police say both boys were in stable condition when they were transported to the hospital. Another 12-year-old boy was involved in the attempted break-in, but was not injured, police say.

The investigation is ongoing and police say the 23-year-old man was not hurt in the incident.
