Reports: XFL laid off all employees, no plans to return next season

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The return of professional football in St. Louis seems to be over, with multiple reports that the XFL will not be back next season. 

Several XFL employees have tweeted that all league employees were laid off during a conference call, Friday. ESPN is reporting league has no plans to return for a 2021 season.

There has been no official statement from the league. 

The XFL just held a conference call in which all employees were told the league is suspending operations. Said one: "The word they used was 'shut down'."

The XFL's inaugural season was cut short due to the coronavirus, just before St. Louis was set to host Los Angeles and getting close to selling out the entire Dome at America's Center. 

All players will be paid their promised salary and benefits for the rest of this season and the league previously said it planned on playing a full season in 2021 and beyond.All ticketholders – including the more than 40,000 who bought tickets for the Rock the Dome game scheduled for March 21 – were issued refunds or given credit toward future games.
