Anna Mae Bullock moved to St. Louis in 1956 when she was 16. She attended Sumner High School and sang in clubs with local musician Ike Turner, her future husband. The two lived at 3126 Virginia Place in East St. Louis. She also worked in the maternity ward of Barnes Hospital during the day. Later, as Tina Turner, she was one of the top recording artists in the 1980s with hits like "Private Dancer" and "What's Love Got to Do With It." A musical chronicling her life and career is currently running in London and New York.
