One of the greatest early base runners played from 1922 to 1950---a period before African-Americans were allowed to play in the Major Leagues. Legends circulated about this phenomenal ballplayer including his stealing three bases on three consecutive pitches and scoring from first on a sacrifice bunt. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, this St. Louis Star lived on Dickson between Jefferson and Webster, and that street now bears his name: Cool Papa Bell Avenue.
