Poet Maya Angelou was born in St. Louis on April 4, 1928. She wrote I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, one of the first autobiographies by a 20th Century black woman to reach a wide general readership. She read her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" at President Bill Clinton's inauguration in 1993 and starred in Roots, the most-watched television TV show or miniseries at its time. Across America, more than fifty buildings are named after Maya Angelou.
