You can't write a history of Jazz without including Miles Davis who grew up in East St. Louis. His parents gave him a trumpet on his 13th birthday. After taking lessons from Shorty Baker, Duke Ellington's trumpet player, Davis became one of the most important international jazz musicians. Statues of Miles Davis can be found in Poland, Switzerland, France and his native Alton, Illinois.
