ST. LOUIS (KMOX) -- St. Louis is mourning the loss of Ward 4 Alderman Sam Moore -- he died Tuesday.Moore had served on the Board of Aldermen since April 2007 and served as a guiding voice, mentor and friend to countless people, including U.S. Congressman Lacy Clay, who refers to Moore as "the governor.""[He was> a true servant of the people and the Ville neighborhood that he loved so much," said Clay in a statement. "He was a champion of the Ville's rich history and a great friend and mentor to me."
Board of Aldermen president Lewis Reed was spending the day with Moore's family and wasn't available to speak in person, but told KMOX in a statement that he is "so saddened at the loss of my spiritual advisor, best friend and brother. Please hold his family and our entire Aldermanic board in your heart during this difficult time." "Today, St. Louis lost a great man," said Ward 20 Alderwoman Cara Spencer on Facebook. "It didn't take long into my tenure to learn who was on the right side of issues, Sam Moore always stood with the people of St. Louis. He was the voice of the voiceless. Unwaveringly. Over the years I've asked most of my colleagues - where are you going to be on this issue, but with Sam I never had to ask."Moore had been battling illness for some time, though his cause of death was not immediately available. A tweet from fellow alderman John Muhammad Jr. last month aluded to the illness, saying "[Moore> is doing great and is in high spirits. He has been binge-watching Hulu!"
Moore's last tweet, some would say, is emblematic of how he lived and treated others. Sent Monday, it reads simply: "Always remember to pray. Always remember to be kind. Always remember to love each other. This is our duty to ourselves and our people."
Moore was 71. Details of a funeral or remembrance service weren't immediately available.© 2020 KMOX (Entercom). All rights reserved.
