ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - In a sport where failure is expected for more than two-thirds of every plate appearance, there are a lot of tough lessons learned.
We asked some St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Shildt, first basemen Paul Goldschmidt and catcher Andrew Knizner if there were any lessons they learned the hard way.
Although Goldschmidt and Shildt didn't give any specific examples, they say they both were told a lot of things from the people around them. For Goldschmidt, it was the Arizona Diamondbacks veterans he watched and learned from in his first pro seasons. And Shildt says he still is taught lessons by fellow coaches, players and baseball figures.
Knizner did give an example, saying he's learned that he's going to have to earn the respect of MLB umpires before he can joke with them.
