Cardinals pitcher to COVID IL after contact with someone who tested positive

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Johan Oviedo was placed on the COVID-19 Injured List before Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader after he came in contact with someone who has tested positive.

President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak's announcement made it clear that the contact happened Tuesday evening so Oviedo has not been around anyone on the team with the day off Wednesday.

Oviedo has not tested positive, but because of the contact, he will self-isolate and be tested on a daily basis.

"As of right now, (Oviedo) has no symptoms which is good, but we are still in the early stages of this," Mozeliak said.

The Cardinals are scheduled to play 23 games in the next 18 days after having a COVID-19 outbreak earlier this season.
