St. Louis civic leader, former US Ambassador George H. Walker has died

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Former U.S. Ambassador and St. Louis civic leader George H. Walker has died.

He served as the U.S. Ambassador to Hungary from 2003 to 2006, under his cousin, President George H. W. Bush.  A former president of Stifel-Nicklaus, Walker was also a major benefactor for Webster University and was active in the civic community.

Walker has served as chairman or on the board of groups such as United Way of Greater St. Louis, Missouri Historical Society, Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis and the St. Louis Science Center. Walker passed away Sunday. Funeral arrangements are pending.

He played an active role in both of his cousin's presidential campaigns in 1988 and 1992.

He served as Finance Chairman for President Richard Nixon in Missouri in 1972 and State Finance Chairman for President Reagan in 1984.  His political activities included election to the Republican Central Committee of St. Louis County representing Clayton Township and soon thereafter election to the State GOP Central Committee. 

Ambassador Walker was married and has eight children and 13 grandchildren.
