LISTEN: Here's the 'tricky' situation the Cardinals are in for today's trade deadline

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Although the St. Louis Cardinals offense is below the league average in batting average, OPS and other highly-touted statistics, it doesn't seem like more help will be coming before the trade deadline. There may not be any new arms coming to the team either.

Our Tom Ackerman asked Cardinals president of baseball operations John Mozeliak if the trade deadline is going to be an opportunity for the team to add some pitching depth to help lighten the workload that comes with playing a lot of doubleheaders and very few days off.

"It's tricky, it's not as simple as that. We're currently at 46 players on our 40-man roster, as players come off the COVID list, that means players have to come off the 40," Mozeliak says. "So even acquiring somebody that would require a 40-man spot is going to be tricky. So it's just trying to navigate that is no easy task.

"Unfortunately I think the timing of this trade deadline for us is just not ideal ... hopefully just getting back healthy is going to prove to be good enough."

The reason that St. Louis is above the maximum 40 players on the 40-man roster right now is because players who are out due to COVID-19 can be replaced without being removed from the 40-man roster.

So will the Cardinals make a deal before 3 p.m. Monday? It doesn't sound likely, but maybe that's just the message the Cardinals want others to think. You never really know.
