Adam Wainwright fires back at Twitter hater who says he can't hit

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - It would appear that we've seen the last of pitchers taking everyday at-bats in the National League, with reports of the designated hitter becoming universal in the possible agreement to start the 2020 MLB season. We've known for a while that it's also very likely to be instituted for the 2021 season and beyond.

But St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright wants one more shot at the plate. He replied to a tweet about the news of the DH coming to the NL and asked his manager Mike Shildt, "Hey shildty.... I'm gonna need one more AB please"

So long National League. It was fun while it lasted. Hey shildty.... I'm gonna need one more AB please

It sparked a bit of a Twitter feud over the 14-year veteran's hitting stats. The 38-year-old was no Bob Gibson at the plate, but does own a career batting average of .199 with 10 career home runs. And you can't leave out the fact that he hit a home run off the first MLB pitch he ever saw (Mike Shannon on the call):

But one Twitter user apparently needed some reminding of Wainwright's skills at the dish. Here's how it went down:

@SKOOOOOBUFFFSSS: I really enjoyed watching you strike out on a failed bunt attempt twice a game, this is gonna be tough to get past

@cwebb2004: Not as much as I enjoyed seeing him hit RBI doubles.

@SKOOOOOBUFFFSSS: yes that one time in 2009 really made it all worth it

That's when Wainwright knocked one out of the park by replying with a screenshot of his stats and saying, "It's funny... @SKOOOOOBUFFFSSS said "that one time in 09".... maybe he meant to type 37 times and his finger slipped.... sniff"

It's a reference to his 37 career doubles.

Here's just another reminder that Waino can rake and we'll miss not getting to see him swing the bat every fifth day:
