(KMOX) — A new Illinois law expands health insurance coverage for mammograms and other breast cancer screenings.

The law requires both private insurers and Medicaid to cover diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and MRIs when prescribed by a doctor.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker says these tests are usually ordered when doctors need to get a better look after a routine mammogram.

"One in eight American women will develop invasive breast cancer. That's one out of every eight women who might be in the fight of their lives," Pritzker said. "Every single one of them deserves access to the highest quality of care."

The law takes effect Jan. 1, 2020.
