ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ill. (KMOX) - Charges could be coming against two boys who were seriously injured after they snuck into the Falling Springs Quarry between Cahokia and Dupo on Sunday night. St. Clair County Sheriff's Capt. Bruce Fleshren says it's unclear how long the boys were there, but they caused some damage to a building and pieces of equipment. "The property owners are wanting to pursue charges," Fleshren says. "They're 12 and 14, sometimes there's some leeway with juveniles on ... what you proceed with criminally, whether it's a diversion program or actual charges, that'll be up to them." The 12-year-old called for help when the forklift, driven by the 14-year-old, fell down a hill and turned over. Fleshren says the 14-year-old's hand was caught under a roll bar, severed, and reattached overnight at the hospital.
The 12-year-old hurt his ankle.
"They're lucky they weren't killed," Fleshren says. "... They're lucky their injuries weren't worse than what they are, that's for sure."
The quarry has perimiter security but none in the pits. Fleshren says the keys were left in the forklift because it was scheduled to be moved today.
