JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) — Missouri Senator Jamilah Nasheed says someone who's been determined to pose a danger to themselves or others should not be able to wield a gun.
She's filed a "Red Flag" measure (Senate Bill 23) that would allow a concerned family member or a law enforcer to file a firearms restraining order that would allow them to temporarily take away someone's weapon.
Dorr says the worst part is that the person would have their firearms taken without having been convicted in court.
"You would have more due process guarantees (if you were) charged with running a red light in downtown St. Louis than you would in this provision," he told KMOX's Brett Blume.
Nasheed calls gun violence an epidemic in St. Louis and elsewhere and says her bill is a common-sense solution to help reduce gun-related crimes.
Her measure is getting support from St. Louis public safety director Judge Jimmie Edwards, who says guns are especially dangerous in the hands of people who are mentally ill.
The bill's being heard by the Senate Transportation, Infrastructure and Public Safety Committee.
A similar bill was made into law last year in Illinois.
