ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Showers and thunderstorms are expected to roll through the region this afternoon and into the evening.

The highest chance for storms will be across Southeast Missouri and Southwest Illinois, south of the St. Louis metro area. The strongest storms are capable of producing quarter-sized hail, damaging winds up to 60 mph, cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy downpours. The National Weather Service warns, "if thunder roars, go indoors."

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Madison and St. Clair counties in Illinois until 4:45 p.m.
