ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Valentine's Day is one of the biggest days of the year for flower sales, but one south St. Louis florist isn't feeling the love this week.
That's because the Polar Vortex destroyed the growing flowers at Urban Buds, and now employees there have to put on their creative caps.
It was a bitterly cold morning a couple of days ago, when co-owner Mimo Davis noticed the lights were not on in the greenhouse. They were on the night before.
Also not on: The heater. And the flowers inside? Dead and limp.
Davis told KMOX's Brian Kelly Monday morning these weren't ordinary, run-of-the-mill flowers.
"We specialize in what we called 'specially kept flowers:' things that don't go into a box well and don't ship well. We provide those to area florists."
Davis says the losses for the greenhouse will be in the thousands.
