ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - A wintery mix of freezing rain and sleet continues across the St. Louis area and south of Interstate 70, causing the National Weather Service to extend a Winter Weather Advisory until 3 p.m.

The NWS predicts the winter weather to leave Missouri by 3 p.m., and Illinois by 6 p.m.

It's beginning to look like the light freezing precip may hang on a bit longer along the Mississippi River. Because of that, we've extended the winter weather advisory until 3pm for those areas, including the STL metro #mowx #ilwx #stlwx pic.twitter.com/FLq3lKBewW

The glaze of ice on any untreated surfaces will make travel difficult, it warns.

MoDOT and IDOT travel maps show issues, not all roads 100% covered. However, spotty ice can be sneaky and cause accidents. And more light sleet/freezing rain is moving through this morning. Drive and walk carefully! #stlwx pic.twitter.com/m1PkFoeREa

And the winter weather isn't going away any time soon - the NWS also says "there is increasing confidence that a storm system will bring accumulating snow to the area" Saturday night into Sunday.
