Yadier Molina doing more mentoring, less catching to start spring

JUPITER, Fla. (KMOX) - Even though Yadier Molina wasn't seen in catching gear to start spring training, that doesn't mean there's anything to worry about with the St. Louis Cardinals catcher.

Manager Mike Shildt says the reason his catcher wasn't behind the plate for bullpen sessions today was simply because he didn't need to be.

"Yadi is going to be gaining his strength, he feels he's in a great spot," Shildt says. "He's not a guy that clearly we feel like we need to push."

Molina had surgery on his knee in mid-December, coming off a season in which he won his ninth career Gold Glove behind the plate.

Even though he wasn't catching, he was keeping an eye on the backstops throughout workouts. We also learned from new left-handed reliever Andrew Miller that Molina lead a meeting going over signs.

Soon enough you'll be seeing Molina in full gear, but he and Shildt won't be in any hurry.
