COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) - Illinois is the 11th state to have legalized recreational marijuana and the state and municipalities are reaping the benefits of its demand.
Recreational marijuana sales started Wednesday in Illinois and it was so busy at a Collinsville dispensary that customers began to be turned away five hours before the store closed. But those who did get to purchase legal pot for the first time in Illinois had a hefty tax bill.
Marijuana buyers may notice on their receipts that they could pay around 30% in taxes, depending on the level of THC in the product they're buying. The more THC, the higher the tax.
However, it didn't seem to be affecting sales. HCI alternatives in Collinsville Illinois had people waiting in line for hours to purchase products.
People started lining up at Illinois Supply and Provisions in Collinsville on New Year's Eve and the line grew so much that customers were being turned away starting at 4 p.m. on New Year's Day. Legally, it must stop selling marijuana at 9 p.m.
