ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Ernie Broglio has died, according to a message posted social media by his daughter, Wednesday. The pitcher was well-known for being part of possibly the most lopsided trade in baseball history, which sent Lou Brock to St. Louis.
The 83-year-old was batteling cancer and was at his San Jose home when he died, according to the post.
Broglio's death was the third of a former Cardinal players in the past two weeks, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Former reserve outfielder Gary Kolb, 79, and lefthanded pitcher Joe Grzenda, 82, also dies recently.
Broglio made his MLB debut with the Cardinals in 1959, then tied for the most wins in the National League the next season, going 21-9 with a 2.75 ERA. Broglio led the NL with a 148 ERA+ and finished third in Cy Young Award voting and ninth in the NL's MVP voting.
Broglio was traded to the Chicago Cubs in 1964, which brought the future Hall of Famer, Brock to St. Louis.
