Derrick Johnson: This Chiefs Super Bowl run tops the others

With four trips to the Super Bowl in the last five years and six straight visits to the AFC Championship, the Chiefs have been on an impressive run of dominance for over half a decade now.

For longtime Kansas City linebacker Derrick Johnson, this postseason stands above the rest.

As opposed to some recent seasons, this year’s Chiefs weren’t the borderline unstoppable force they had been in years past. The offense struggled to put all the pieces together for a good chunk of the campaign and there were bad losses to teams they clearly are better than.

But when it mattered most, Patrick Mahomes and Co. put everything together to earn another trip to the Super Bowl. Not only has the offense started firing on all cylinders, but the defense has been remarkable, stymying three otherwise high-flying offenses this January in the Dolphins, Bills, and Ravens.

Johnson said Monday on Fescoe in the Morning that the doubt surrounding Kansas City entering the postseason is what has made this run stand above the rest.

“I think it’s the top one just because of how they did it," Johnson said. "When you have Tyreek Hill and you have certain players on the team and you’re flourishing and people are giving you credit and you’re the favorite and everything is going through Kansas City – not that it’s not special, don’t get me wrong – but this year just ranks at the top.

“It’s just different, it’s finding a way to get the job done. At the end of the day, the objective, don’t worry about the obstacles throughout the year, worry about the objective and that’s the wins and the losses – the Lamar Hunt trophy, our owner’s trophy, bringing that home and having an opportunity to play for the Super Bowl.”

Now, the Chiefs get to try putting the finishing touches on the year against an elite 49ers team that has been one of the most successful groups on both sides of the ball this season.
