ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - There's "frustration" from both the St. Louis Cardinals and starting pitcher Miles Mikolas, who will receive some imaging due to shoulder soreness, manager Mike Shildt announced Tuesday. He will not throw a bullpen session that was scheduled for Wednesday.
Shildt told reporters in a video conference that the move will "clearly" affect his plans for Opening Day. The team expected he would be part of the starting rotation to begin the 2021 season.
"He's not overly concerned about the imaging," Shildt says. "He's not. We're not. You never know until you look. He's just not progressing and getting the soreness out of his shoulder as quickly as we or he would like.
"Miles is frustrated. We're frustrated for him."
Mikolas had surgery to repair a flexor tendon strain in his right elbow last July and missed the entire season.
The remainder of top candidates for the starting rotation would include Jack Flaherty, Adam Wainwright, Kwang Hyun Kim, Carlos Martinez, John Gant, Daniel Ponce de Leon and Génesis Cabrera. Earlier on Tuesday, St. Louis ruled Alex Reyes and Johan Oviedo out of the competition to prepare them for bullpen roles to start this season.
